Odss And Gambling
Odds are a way to express the likelihood that some event will or will not happen.
The odds of an event occurring is the ratio of the number of ways the event can occur (successes) to the number of ways the event cannot occur (failures). This lesson will discuss odds and the uses in gambling and Limit Hold’em.
If the odds in a situation are favorable, they are expressed as “Odds On” or IN FAVOR OF. If you express odds as “Odds On” (1 to 3 IN FAVOR OF), you put the chances for the event happening first and total chances second. If the event is more likely not to occur than occur; it is expressed as “Odds Against”. (i.e. 4 to 1 ODDS AGAINST) The first number is the number of chances against, and the second number is chances for.
Probability is another way to express the likelihood that an event will occur. Many people don’t realize that odds and probability are calculated differently.
Odds are often a better tool than probability to use when trying to make decisions in poker, but it is important to learn how to apply both. Odds are usually used in gambling situations because it is the best tool available to set up the wager.
It is extremely important that you realize there is a major difference in the two methods, and what that means in poker terms. When you are 1 to 3 IN FAVOR OF, that does not mean the probability is 1/3. This is a common mistake. What it means is your probability is 1/4. In future lessons we will show you how to convert odds into probability and percentages. This may be a little overwhelming at first, but the more you learn and the more examples you see, it will all begin to make more sense.
An example of odds in gambling:
The ODDS AGAINST the Minnesota Vikings winning the Superbowl, are 30 to 1. In gambling terms, this ratio is called the payout odds, for every $1 wagered $30 is paid for a win.
Pot Odds are another name for payout odds, and is a term specific to poker. Pot odds are the ratio of the current size of the pot to the cost of a contemplated call. So if a Pot is $10 and you must call $1 to stay in the hand, you have 10 to 1 Pot Odds.
One of the most important strategies in Limit Hold’em, is to play tight so you can consistently put yourself in situations where you the favorite. However, there are many situations where you are behind in a hand with cards to come, and the correct decision is not to fold. Profiting in poker often involves calculating the pot odds and comparing it to your estimate of your odds of winning. This is a fundamental concept in Limit Hold’em and in poker in general. If you can consistently make and call bets where the odds of winning the hand are better than the pot odds you will be profitable long term.
