In the US it is popularly called Badugi. Not many international players are familiar of this game but they are still offered in online
What is Badugi Poker?
Badugi is triple draw poker game. The main goal of the game is for the player to acquire the best four low hands with cards that have different suits. If you have such cards at the end of the game, you have a budagi and win the pot. The best hand is the four card. If two players have the same set of numbers, the one with the lowest card wins. If they both have the same low card, the second to the lowest is then used.
Badugi Poker Rules
The showdown rules are similar to that of a Texas Hold em game. The game starts by a small bet made by the player left of the dealer. The next player places a big blind then the betting moves clockwise. Players are dealt with four cards. The game has three rounds. The player has the option of replacing their card in any of the rounds.
At the first round, players can opt to raise, bet or fold. After the bets are matched, the first draw commences where players can choose to replace one of their cards. The second round follows. Players must place a bet equal to the one made if they want to stay in the game. A second draw is given to the players. After that is the last round in which players have to make a bet equal to the highest one made to stay in the game. The third draw is provided in which players have the last chance to replace their cards. Players can also opt to stick with what they have been dealt with during the game if they feel that they have a budagi in their hands. The players show their hands.
The player with a badugi – lowest four hand (aces being low and king the highest) – is the winner. Any card with the same suit is discarded. Values of the card are determined by counting from the highest to the lowest. The best is the four card, and the worst is the one card due to copying suits. Badugi can be played in pot limit, no limit and fixed limit game. The game is slowly becoming popular in the US, and online casino sites offer the poker variant. It’s pretty easy to learn, but like any other card game, it can be frustrating at first. The key here is to know when to fold.
