7 Card Stud Hi-Lo
7 Card Stud has always held a special place in the hearts of gambler for centuries now, once the most popular poker variant in existence (before Texas Hold’em took over the top spot), and its Hi-Lo variation is becoming progressively favored as the years go by. 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo is played in the same fashion as 7 Card Stud, except that there are two players aiming to split the pot – the High Hand winner and the Low Hand winner.
7 Card Stud Hi-Lo is played by 2 to 8 players using a standard deck of 52 cards.
Object of 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo Poker
The object of 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo is to combine 5 of the 7 cards dealt to you to create the strongest possible poker hand. The highest ranking hand wins half of the pot. Next, players combine 5 of the 7 cards again, this time developing the weakest possible poker hand. The lowest hand, if it qualifies (see below), wins the other half of the pot.
Qualifying Low Hand
Anyone who is even slightly familiar with poker knows what it takes to win a High Hand, but most Hi-Lo poker games are a bit more restrictive when it comes to winning a low hand. In order to “Qualify” for a winning low hand, it must have no card higher than an 8 (hence the term “8 or Better”). Here are the general guidelines for developing a Qualifying Low Hand in 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo:
- No card higher than 8
- Aces are consider the lowest card (in low hands only)
- Straight and Flushes are not considered combinations (in low hands only)
The best possible Qualifying Low Hand: A-2-3-4-5
The worst possible Qualifying Low Hand: 4-5-6-7-8
Betting Structure of 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo
7 Card Stud Hi-Lo can be played in any limit, but a Fixed Limit betting structure is the most common, therefore the system we’ll be detailing. Fixed Limit pertains to the forced bet sizes throughout a hand. There are 5 betting rounds in 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo. During the first 3 betting rounds, all bets and raises must equal the low-end stakes. For the final two rounds, all bets and raises increase to meet the high-end stakes.
For example, if playing $4/$8 stakes, players must place bets and raises of $4 in the first 3 rounds, raised to $8 in the last two rounds.
Unlike Texas Hold’em and many other poker variants, 7 Card Stud does not require Blind Bets (Small Blind and Big Blind), instead taking a small Ante Bet from every player before the hand is dealt, and a Bring-In Bet from the p[layer with the lowest starting hand, after the initial deal.
Ante Bet: An Ante Bet is generally 10% t 25% of the low-end stakes, though the actual amount varies by poker room. Antes are forced bets, placed by every player before the hand is dealt.
Bring-In Bet: The Bring-In is also a forced bet, equal to 50% of the low-end stakes (much like a Small Blind), and placed by the player with the lowest “Door Card”. When the initial deal occurs, each player is given 3 cards – 2 face down and one face up. The face up card is the “Door Card”. Should two or more players tie for the lowest Door Card, the lowest suit determines the Bring-In Bettor. Suits rank lowest to highest alphabetically – Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts, Spades.
All other betting options are detailed below.
Check: If no player has bet before you, you may choose to Check, declining to bet but staying active in the hand.
Bet: When a player tosses the first chips into the pot in a single betting round, it is called the Bet.
Call: Once a player has bet, other players may Call the bet by wagering an equal amount of chips.
Raise: Once a player has bet, another player may Raise by wagering more than the previous bet.
Fold: To remove yourself from the current hand, throwing in your cards and forfeiting the current pot.
All-In: To bet it all! Because of the betting limitation in Fixed Limit, All-In bets can only be placed when a player has just enough, or not enough, chips to cover a Bet, Call or Raise.

The Showdown: It is not uncommon in 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo for all players to Fold before the Showdown, revealing an instant winner. However, if two or more players remaining, the Showdown will take place. Since 7 Card Stud Hi-Lo aims to award two winners, we’ll separate this into two sections below…
High Hand Winner: All active players will combine 5 of their 7 cards to develop the strongest possible poker hand. The highest ranking poker hand wins half of the pot.
Low Hand Winner: Active players then combine 5 of their 7 cards again, this time trying to develop the weakest Qualifying Low Hand (see ‘Qualifying Low Hand’ above). The lowest qualifying hand wins the other half of the pot.
